A message from Ramona, Interim Park Supervisor, Visitor Services Supervisor

Tremendous thanks to the Friends! The Friends group is supportive to the Park, the major restoration projects, and public programming efforts. This year staff have been “fenced” in as the major landscaping has been taking place. While this has severely limited programming, the transformation in vital areas of the Park is mostly complete. The Park itself has been left alone. Three areas have been re-constructed: the parking lot with the safety “turn-around” realignment and a dozen more spaces; the main entrance trail up to and inside the Visitor Center is now compliant with ADA for universal access; and the old pasture field has been seeded for a New England pollinator meadow and less mowing! On weekend days I have been providing outdoor “Roving Interpretation” going with artifacts to where people are gathered. I’ve also set up two-hour “Investigation Stations” at sites around the Quarry, the Overlook, and near the park entrance. Engaging thankful visitors is rewarding. Through Roving and Stationing Interpretation opportunities in the Park I’ve reached hundreds of people each weekend. I’ve brought to visitors from around the country (& world) a high-quality communication about DCR’s and Halibut’s cultural and natural heritage—mostly about quarrying history. Most exciting is that I am currently working with DCR to create exterior interpretive signage at the entrance, the Visitor Center, and the Quarry. Of course, huge credit goes out to the Friends for all their historical information and financial support!!!
